PLAYGROUND PROBLEMS
DONE BY: HOXIN ER [09]
1] What do I see as a problem in the playground?
` Not all playgrounds have all kinds of facilities.[E.g. Some playgrounds do not have swings, megaphones, etc.]
` Not enough innovative ideas. All those playgrounds we see every now and then is the same facilities.
` Ground should be softer. If let's say a child falls from the top of the stairs etc, cement ground is going to hurt a lot.

2] How can we citizens improve in the playground?
` Parents to look after the children to ensure his/her safety.

3] In what way do I think we can make the playground more appealing?
` More NEW&fun facilities.
- The colours of the playground must be bright, attention-catching, yet complement each other[bright red with light blue].

4] How can we make our playground more accessible for the disabled children?
` [Without legs] Have ramps, railings, low ground, facilities able to carry wheelchair that children plays.
` [Blind] Braille [tic-tac-toe, alphabets, numbers] for learning of life-skills while in the process of playing].

Literature Playground questions
1) What do I see as problems in the playgrounds near you?

Basically, in some playgrounds, I see that some of them do not have the thrill factors. Most of the playgrounds lack of the swing and also the monkey bars. The playgrounds are also a bit bias because it does not allow those physically disadvantaged people to play as well. Also, most of the playgrounds have the same shape, which means lack of creativity. Most children can expect what they can play everytime they visit a different playground.

2) How can we improve on the playgrounds?

We could write in to the government and give the government ideas on how to improve on the playground. Sometimes, injuries can happen in the playground. So, partly, we can educate our family members about the safety precautions while playing in the playground.

3) In what way can you make the playground more appealing to other group of people?

We can write in to the government to make the playgrouds bigger, more colourful and etc. We can also make the playground a bit lowert so that it is easier for those with difficulties to play. Ohte than that, we can also put more railings to ensure the safety of all the members of the public while playing on the playground. The members of the public can also do their part as to not to vandalise the government property.

Comments of the playgrounds around the neighbourhood
1.What do you see as problems in the playground near you?

Most of the playgrounds around our neighbourhood do not have swings and I felt that some of the playgrounds are also too high, accidents may happen anytime which is very dangerous.

2. In what way you can make the playground more accessible for children of different disabilities?

We can help to look after one another and also write petitions to the resident committee (RC) to improve the playground in the neighbourhood.

3. What can you do to improve the playgrounds?

Add in more colours to make the playground colourful and also add in more facilities. More ramps can also be built for those children who are handicapped. When constructing the playground, consider the idea of not building it too high for safety precaution and also more railings to be put inplace for the disabled children.

WIP 03) PROJECT TASK: SA1 (100%) – Final Version
2a) Explain how your reading of the novel had inspired the design of the playground in 100 words.

Firstly, the playground is fenced. Fencing the playground is to only allow physically handicapped children to play. In the novel, Terabithia is being 'fenced' due to the creek. Although the playground looks like any ordinary playground, but the fun and magic has to be looked at a deeper angle, and not just on the surface. The bridge is in the middle to represent a portal from the real world to a virtual world. When the physically handicapped children crosses it, they will have this sense freedom, just like Terabithia because Jess and Leslie were always free of trouble in Terabithia.

2b) Write a 100-word explanation as to why you had chosen the specific recycled materials for your model.

We chose cardboard, ice-cream sticks, sticky tape and paper to make the model. Cardboard is hard and found easily, so we use it as the model backing. It can be related back to be pierced for fencing. Ice-cream sticks are used for the bridge, which is sturdier than cardboard because the bridge will be flimsy if we use cardboard. Paper is used for megaphones, as it can be cut and designed easily. We assemble everything with sticky tape. Cotton strings are used as part railings as it is weak and is easily handled. All materials are bio-degradable to reduce wastage.

WIP 03) Other Considerations
Money spent
Budget: $5.00
Spent: $2.20 -- superglue to stick the ice cream sticks together.

How our model is parallel to the novel?
  • The Bridge
  • We build the music corner to instill the love of music into the children like how Jess and his classmates loves music.
  • The materials we use are all bio-degradable like Jess' Terabithia which is mostly made up of nature.

Note: For more information on the Bridge, please see the post below.

WIP 03) FINAL SUBMISSION OF MODEL (FACILITIES, MATERIALS AND REASONS)
- Proposal-description of playground features: Eco-friendliness? How is the design/concept linked to the novel? How does it meet children's special needs?)
Eco-friendliness [ALL MATERIALS ARE BIO-DEGRADABLE]:
i.Cotton:
- Make the ground of the playground soft to not injure them when the children fall.
ii.Ice-cream sticks:
- They are quite strong, can be used as bridge, railings, slide etc.
iii.Carton:
- It is taken from the back of foolscap paper, which is unwanted and can be recycled.
iv.Paper:
- As there are little bits of papers we use everyday, so we recycle & use it on model[e.g. megaphones]
i.Cotton strings:
- It is stronger than thread and used to hold the bridge and railings together.

Design/concept linked to the novel
Jess is a shy person by nature. He doesn't interacts much, even with his family, and is dependant on hinself. He loves drawing, that's for sure. Also, the bridge in "Bridge To Terabithia " means that the bridge is a link between Jess real life and his imaginary kingdom. Hence, a bridge is to be included.Below are the facilities linked to the novel.

Facilities
Music Corner
- As mentioned earlier, Jess loves drawing. Similarly, he also loves music (Ms Edmunds' lesson). Hence, we decided to include a form of art to the playground. It is creative learning, and curious children will playing the keys themselves, discover new objects and get pleasure from it.

Whale
- It trains wheelchair-bound children to be dependent on their hands to hold on and keep their balance; hand-handicapped to depend on their legs to balance. Overall, the main purpose is to make them be dependant on themselves, as their parents cannot be around forever to take care of them.

Megaphone
- Jess is shy and have difficulty in communication. We make pairs of megaphones all around the playground to enable communication between unfamiliar kids. When kids do not know the other's identity, although shy, but since they're not face to face, they will be more confident to talk out loud.

Bridge
- Helps to overcome their fear of height & unstableness, as they're phyiscally handicapped. We use this method to train their confidence to be able face difficulties.
- Bridge is the revolving point of the whole model. So, we would add a bridge in the model. The bridge stands for the link from a real world & a virtual world. Which means, bridge is a step to another place, which is the house to house in our model.
- Our bridge is a challenge for physically handicapped to overcome their fears, also act as a barrier for overcoming their fear of heights, to eventually assist them to overcome fear in real life. As Jess is not very good at overcoming his fear, we use his weakness to improve the physically handicapped.
- The bridge is linked with the novel, as Terabithia is a imaginary perfect kingdom. When children overcome their fear and successfully go over the bridge, they’ll be contented & hence go to a world free of worries, only happiness.

Meet children's special needs
- The railings on the bridge help the wheelchair-bound to hold on it for balance.
- There are handles on the rocking whale for children to hold on, lest they fall down. Hand-handicapped can use their legs to balance on the ground and whale.
- Cotton on ground lest childen fall down, to minimize pain.

WIP 01) Our Research
What is disability/handicap?
A disability is a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group. The term is often used to refer to individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic disease. This usage has been described by some disabled people as being associated with a medical model of disability. The human rights or social model by contrast is presented as focusing on the interaction between a person and their environment, highlighting the role of a society in labeling, causing or maintaining disability within that society, including through attitudes or accessibility and favoring the majority. Disabilities may come to people during their life or people may be born disabled.

What are the effects of disability/handicap?
Developmental disability is a term used to describe life-long disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical or combination of mental and physical impairments, manifested prior to age twenty-two. The term is used most commonly in the United States to refer to disabilities affecting daily functioning in three or more of the following areas:

* capacity for independent living
* economic self-sufficiency
* learning
* mobility
* receptive and expressive language
* self-care
* self-direction

Mental disorder or mental illness are terms used to refer to a psychological or physiological pattern that occurs in an individual and is usually associated with distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture. The recognition and understanding of mental disorders has changed over time.

A chronic disease is a disease that is long-lasting or recurrent. The term chronic describes the course of the disease, or its rate of onset and development. A chronic course is distinguished from a recurrent course; recurrent diseases relapse repeatedly, with periods of remission in between. As an adjective, chronic can refer to a persistent and lasting medical condition. Chronicity is usually applied to a condition that lasts more than three months.

The definition of a disease or causative condition may depend on the disease being chronic, and the term chronic will often, but not always appear in the description:

* Chronic osteoarticular diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis
* Chronic respiratory diseases: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma
* Chronic renal failure
* Diabetes mellitus
* Chronic Hepatitis
* Autoimmune diseases, like lupus erythematosus
* Cardiovascular diseases: heart failure, ischemic cardiopathy, cerebrovascular disease
* Neoplasic diseases not amenable to be cured
* Osteoporosis

Many chronic diseases require chronic care management for effective long-term treatment.

REUSABLE/RECYCLABLE/BIODEGRADABLE BUILDING MATERIALS

Incorporating reusable/recyclable/biodegradable building materials in your project can reduce waste, pollution, and energy use. Some examples of reusable/recyclable/biodegradable building materials include:

Wood (reusable/recyclable/biodegradable)
Earthen Materials (reusable/biodegradable)
Steel, Aluminum, Iron, Copper (reusable/recyclable)
Bricks (reusable/recyclable)
Concrete (may be crushed and recycled)
Gypsum/Drywall (recyclable, sometimes biodegradeable)
Straw Bale Insulation (biodegradable)
Wool Carpet (biodegradable)
Linoleum Flooring (biodegradable)

Benefits of Reusable/Recyclable/Biodegradable Materials

The extraction, manufacture and transport, and disposal of virgin building materials pollutes air and water, depletes resources, and damages natural habitats. Construction and demolition are responsible for roughly 30% of the U.S. solid waste stream and real-world case studies by the Alameda County Waste Management Authority have demonstrated more than 85% of that material, from flooring to roofing to packaging, is reusable or recyclable.

The benefits of reusing/recycling/biodegrading building materials include: reduced landfill waste, reduced embodied energy, aesthetically pleasing materials, and reduced impacts from harvest or mining of virgin materials (e.g., logging old-growth or tropical hardwood trees, mining metals, etc.) Using reusable/recyclable/biodegradable materials supports companies that take the care to make such environmentally preferable products.

On the other hand, be aware that some materials should not be reused, or require remediation. Materials contaminated by hazardous substances such as asbestos and lead paint must be treated and/or disposed of properly. Avoiding materials that will cause future problems is critical to long-term waste reduction, as well as the health of our community and the planet.

Why Leslie died off stage:
It is a children's movie.Showing Leslie dying, some childern may be scared. Some children may also have a phobia of water thus showing this scene they may scared.

2)Dark Lord:
For Jess:I think the Dark Lord for Jess not being understood by other people.

For Leslie:I think her Dark Lord is not having any friends.

For me: I think for me is speaking chinese because my chinese is not really very good.

Which version do I like better:
I like the movie version better because I think it give me a clearer picture of the whole story and is much more interesting than the novel.

Qustions By Ms Jumiah.
1) Why did Leslie die off-stage?
Firstly, I think it’s because the directors should think that it’ll be very very dangerous to film Leslie’s head knocking onto a hard rock. Even if there are no more scenes relating to Leslie, then filming should never consist of such dangerous events. In addition, there need to have a suitable condition to film the scene. Example is that when rain falls and it’s very slippery between Leslie’s hands and the rope to let Leslie slip or for the rope to break, and then there must be strong currents to emphasize it. Once again, this scene would be a very dangerous and challenging.

Secondly, the directors did that to surprise the audience. Because Leslie’s death happened when Ms Edmunds took Jess to the museum. There may be a little panic in the audience’ hearts for Leslie. But the directors shifted the limelight to Jess to minimize the anxiety in the audience. So when Jess returned happily back home, only then will the audience once again think about Leslie. This makes the audience feel very very sudden and will much better understand the plight and emotions of the lead, Jess.

Thirdly, although the film is suitable for all ages, but this whole movie is about teenagers and friendship so the subjected audience would mainly be teenagers. Teenagers look forward to a good ending plus a challenging yet good-relation friendship. There is a twist in the end, not very nice but is acceptable. Sometimes, it’s not advisable to let such death-related scenes to show on stage (with exception to horror movies), since the subjected audience is teenagers although it’s not a problem to teenagers nowadays. Still, like in the second reason, the audience can feel the way how Jess feels, not witnessing the process of how Leslie die.

2) Who and what does the dark lord represent for?
i. Jess
I think the dark lord of Jess is being ignored by Ms Edmunds. In both the novel and movie, it’s very obvious that Jess liked Ms Edmunds very much. There was once in the movie in the first Friday when Jess came back to school. Jess was so mesmerized by Ms Edmunds that he was deaf to all sounds except Ms Edmunds’ voice, her singing that he remembered back home. It was the background music, no mistake, but it also portrays how much Jess loved the singing of Ms Edmunds.

There was another time, when Jess and Leslie has become great friends, were walking together when Jess spotted Ms Edmunds. Jess left Leslie behind and sped over to Ms Edmunds, offered to help her carrying her musical instruments, plus opening the door for her despite his hands full of instruments. He was even bullied by the others but he didn’t retaliate. This shows that Jess wants himself a perfect image in front of Ms Edmunds.

Lastly, in the novel, Jess shows Ms Edmunds his art pieces. But his father rejected Jess’s art pieces and objected his wish on being an artist. Whereas in Ms Edmunds’ case, she praised and enjoyed Jess’ art work, which makes Jess very very happy, and felt that he have found a companion.

The reason why I didn’t take Mr Aarons as Jess’ dark lord is because Mr Aarons once rejected how Jess thinks, and Jess feels that he’s unable to communicate with his father and family. He helped his father because of responsibility, not because he wants to. But it’s a different case for Ms Edmunds. He would feel indifferent if his father ignored him as this is common to him. But if Ms Edmunds ignored him, he would be devastated as she is his companion, the one who truly understands him.

ii. Leslie
I think Leslie’s dark lord is being alone. As in the movie, Leslie is ignored when she won the race. Being a little thick-skinned for a girl, she followed Jess and intended to make friends with him even Jess didn’t even look at her. She started the conversation, the topic, everything, the purpose is just to make a friend. If she liked being alone, she wouldn’t have tried in vain to get Jess’ attention and be friends with him.

iii. Me
For me, it’s both cases of Jess and Leslie. Because my relationship ties with my family are not good, I tend to have a companion (very good friend). So if I’m being ignored by my closest friend, I’ll have no one to pour my deepest darkness secrets and become quite lonely. When I’m lonely, I tend to keep everything to myself and sometimes get more troubled and very unhappy, very isolated, which I really dread.

3) Which version do you like better and why?
I like the movie better. I like to see things moving than just to read plain text. Because when reading text, I sometimes get excited and just skipped through words I don’t understand, and don’t bother to check it up. As a result, sometimes I don’t fully understand important parts. But when I see the movie version, I see the emotions, expressions, the level of happiness etc. Hence, I can fully interpret the message sent. Although I also know the message sent in the novel, but the movie gives me a better understanding of the overall view.

Our Thoughts
a) Why did Leslie die off stage?
-I think Leslie died off stage because if they show how she died, the main character will be shifted to her. In this movie, Jesse should be the main character, not Leslie. Also, if they were to show how she died, the scene would be too hideous and too sad to watch. Compare this to the novel, the novel allows people to think and let their creativity flow. It also allows them to either visualize how Leslie die or to try not to think about it. It gives the reader to choice to either see it or not.

b)Who/What does the dark Lord represent to Leslie, Jess and me?
-Leslie: I think the dark lord for Leslie is the lack of friends that she has.

Jess: I think the dark lord for Jess is he is scared by a lot of things and also his lack of imagination.

Me: I think my dark lord is my fear of public speaking.

c) Which one do you prefer, novel or movie?
-To me, I prefer the novel because usually, novels tells more than the story. In this case, it is true. The novel allows me to use my creativity at the ending part of the novel, the part that requires you to use your imagination and creativity. If I watch a movie, I would not watch it unless I have finished reading the whole novel first. Why? It allows me to think deeper in each scene and also allows me to compare the movie and the novel version. Overall, I prefer the novel version.

Why did Leslie die off stage?

Leslie die off stage because the directors want to let the lead actor,Jess, to express his feelings when his only best friend passed away when he was out in the museum with Miss Edmunds. They wanted Jess to be the limelight when he came home from the musuem without knowing that Leslie had passed away. Thus the audience will understand the pain of losing a friend and the emotions of the lead actor,Jess. As for the directors filming this movie, it is very dangerous to ask Leslie to knock onto a hard rock when crossing to Terabithia and fall down into the river and get drown in such a heavy rain. Thus it is very tedious to film it during a heavy rain. It is also quite tragic to show how Leslie die when she was crossing to Terabithia. As for the novel, the writer will tend to allow the reader to imagine and think about the story. Thus it is whether the reader wants to visualize the death of Leslie or not.

What does the dark lord represent for Jess, Leslie and myself?

Jess- I think that the dark lord for Jess is whether people could understand him more and he is not very imaginative to think about Terabithia compared to Leslie. He is also not daring enough. He is afraid of imagined creatures in Terabithia when Leslie passed away.

Leslie- I think that the dark lord for Leslie is her lack of friends and always alone. The only friend that she has is only Jess and May belle. She only can confide her secrets to Jess as he is the one understanding her the most.

Myself- I think my dark lord is about losing friends, my way of expressing something to someone and being in an unfamiliar place. Losing just one friend means a lack of confiding something to them and helping each other. Sometimes, my friends do not really get what i mean when i speak. I do not really like going to somewhere with a lot of strangers i am not familiar. I am afraid i might get lost and cannot find my way back. If i am with a friend or someone i know around, i will feel much more secure and safer.

Which version do I like better and why?

I like the movie version better because the movie is much more interesting compared to the novel and it interprets more details. I understand more after watching the movie than I was reading the novel as the novel does not really explain how it is going to do. The novel need to imagine all those things and i am not really good at it. I can see the emotions, feelings of how Jess and Leslie act. I like the ending part of the movie the most as Terabithia was a imaginary castle with creatures living there.

What I think:

Leslie died off stage because they wanted to put the focus on Jess's feelings since he was the lead actor. I think that filming Leslie when she dropped down the creek is very dangerous moreover she is considered too young.

Dark Lord-

For Jess: I think that the Dark Lord for Jess is being not daring enough. He feared of going to dark places, the evidence can be found when Leslie told the class about her hobby and also when Leslie brought him to Terabithia ,the part when they build Terabithia.

For Leslie: I think that the Dark Lord for Leslie was trying to make friends. The only friends that she had were Jess and May Belle. The only person that understand her was Jess. He was the only one that she can confide to.

For me: I think that the Dark Lord for me is feared of being alone. Imagine that one has no friend at all ,life would be so miserable. No one to share your joy and sufferings.I hate to be alone.

Which version do I like better-

I like the movie version better because I feel that the movie is more interesting than the novel version. I especially like the ending part of the movie, the part when Jess took May Belle to Terabithia, the imaginary creatures in Terabithia. When I read the novel, I did not really understand the whole story but after watching the movie I understand the story better.

Part C-Literature

Christmas

Christmas, also known as Christmas Day or Christmastide, is an annual holiday falling on December.Modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations—including the Christmas tree, lights. Santa Claus,is also a major aspect of Christmas; he is believed as being a bringer of gifts on or before Christmas.

Christmas is celebrated by the Christian but it is also celebrated by many non-Christians. The holiday is widely celebrated around the world. What we felt about christmas is that it is a meaningful and a funfill festive for everyone.

Hari Raya

Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Singapore celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration" — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of "Hari Raya Aidiladha".

The main greeting used by Muslims is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

On the eve of Hari Raya, Muslims will recite the takbir, which is held in mosques and surau (smaller place of worship. Decorations are hung in public areas and Hari Raya songs will be played in shopping complexes. The media, such as the television will host various programs in conjunction with the celebrations.

Many people also traditionally return to their hometown generally from big cities to rural areas. This is known as balik kampung — literally going back to one's home town to celebrate Hari Raya with family and friends. On the eve of the celebrations, family members, will be busy preparing cakes, sweets, biscuits and various delicacies to be served on the day of Hari Raya. Delicacies such as ketupat and rendang are among the most famous cuisines that are served during this day. Other family members will help in other chores such as decorating and cleaning up the house.

Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Once the prayer is done, it is also common for Muslims in Malaysia to visit the grave of their loved ones. During this visit, they will clean the grave, perform the recital of the Yasin — a chapter (surah) from the Qur'an and also the tahlil or prayers for the deceased. All these are done in hope that their loved ones are blessed by God and they are spared from the punishment in the grave.

The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children will be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders. =)

Comparing Jess And His family
Comparing Jess experience with mine

My family do not celebrate Christmas. But still, we still stand united, share all our happiness and troubles together. Whereas for Jess, he spend his Christmas with his best friend, Leslie, instead of his family. Christmas is supposed to be a festival where family gets together and bond.

For us, Christmas is just another happy bonding time for us to get together with our family but for Jess, he do not like spending time with his family and I pity him.

I hope that Jess will have a better relationship with his family and so our differences are not too much anymore.

Comparing Jess experience with mine

My family did not really get ready to celebrate Christmas but we do celebrated it. On that day, we still do our usual work but not helping out in the farm like Jess do until he is very tired. Jess' family even started buying presents one month before Christmas but we do not really have any person in mind to give presents to as all our relatives are in Indonesia.

At night, my parents prepared pasta for us to eat together for dinner. After that, we prayed as a family and my brother switched off the main lights as we are using candles to create a more peaceful surroundings. We ate and joked around together and the ambience is high. As for Jess, his family do not eat together and have a lot of arguments with his family too.

I love Christmas but I am sorry for Jess who loves Christmas Eve more than Christmas. I felt that Christmas is a special bonding time with my family.

Comparing Jess experience with mine

My family and I did not really celebrate Christmas like what Jess and his family did. We just went out and have fun together at the beach. Over there, we spent a few hours cycling, exercising, slacking and also having fun. Apart from that, we also went shopping together at Vivo City. I splurged the most, buying thing ranging from shoes, bags, clothes and also spending money at arcade games :)

Compare my experience to Jess, I still prefer my experience. Jess had to clean the house and stuff. But worse of all, he was teased by his siblings for not having any girlfriends. Jess also had a hard time saving enough money to buy a gift for Leslie. Jess also had a hard time thinking of buying a present for his siblings. It is either too normal or too expensive. When he saw a present to give Leslie, it was free and something which he thought would not be appreciated. He stll got one for her and they traded gifts. Jess got something he really wanted, an art set and he was grateful for it even though it was not so significant.

Comparing with Jess and his familly :)
Comparing Jess and his family(:

Compared to Jess experience of Christmas,I was glad that my family had a wonderful time when we are in Genting. Jess have to collect money by himself to buy the things that he wants but my parents give us a fix amount of money for us to buy what we wanted. He also have no one to visit except Leslie during Christmas and stay at home the whole day doing nothing but I was able to enjoy myself with my relatives together when we are at Genting.

Jess also have to help out in the farm during Christmas but not for me, I was enjoying playing, eating and relaxing with my family and relatives. Jess's sisters treated him badly during the day which was suppose to be a joyous day for everyone. I was glad it does not happen to me, my siblings and I went around window shopping and even went to see the museum and it was very interesting.Able to be together with our family is wonderful as we can feel the warmness and security with our parents and siblings around. =)

Comparing with Jess and his familly :)

My family and I also celebrate Christmas. We buy gifts for our friends wishing them Merry Christmas which was similar to what Jess experienced with his family during Christmas. I understood how Jess felt as I experienced it before, not knowng what to buy as gifts for my friends as they had all the things that they needed.

Sometimes when you found something that you are satisfied with, you then realised that you don not have enough money to buy , I can understand how Jess felt. I do not ask my parents for money ,I often use my own pocket money to buy those gifts which was quite different from Jess.

My family don't not sing carols just like Jess and his family members did ,my family prepared a feast and a log cake for Christmas.Sometimes my siblings and I attended Christmas party where we meet new friends and enjoy ourselves.I love the part when we tear the gift wrapper best because it is the most exciting part ,eager to know what is inside the present.I normally celebrate it when my parents felt like it and don't celebrate when we don't feel like it. So it all depends on my parents mood. =)

Chinese New Year :

On this year's new year eve, my family and I were busy arranging the new year food and drinks on the table. I helped to stalk the flowers in the vase and arranged the drinks. At night, I help my mother to pack the red packets to be given out the next day. 5 minutes before midnight, our whole family did the countdown together. At the start of new year, my family are all in high spirit. Everyone stayed happy for a long time before we went to sleep.

On New Year's day, my family and I were dressed up in pretty new clothes and set off to our relatives' home. Here and there we went. By the end of the day, I have collected around $70. The next day was also the same. But we kept saying jokes, wished each other good luck and hence increased the happy atmosphere within us. As usual, it is our custom that we would go and watch a film every second day of the New Year, according to the lunar calendar. We spend 2 days together in a heart warming manner.

As days continued, we went everywhere together as a family and built up our ties as a bonding period. On the fifth day, my parents returned to work. Until then, we stick together and did not separate from each other.

Chinese New Year that I had spent =)

My family and I celebrated Chinese New Year every year.I love Chinese New Year because we can get to collect red packets and eat alot of goodies.Sometimes it can be quite boring actually because every year, it is the same old thing, no changes at all.So sometimes when Chinese New Year is coming, I don't really look forward to it.My family and I would go to our relatives house and give our blessings and 2 mardarin oranges ,meaning that all good things will come in twos.

Chinese New Year to me is also a form of bonding because it is also this festive that I can get together with my relatives who are not so close to me.We gathered together play, joke and have fun.During Chinese New Year, many people will be wearing red because it represents luck and auspicious.I think that celebrating Chinese New Year is a troublesome festive because we need to do spring cleaning which I hate most.To me the festive that I like most is Christmas because this is the festival that the people from different races can celebrate it together. :)

Experience of Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year :

On Chinese New Year day, my parents woke all of us up very early in the morning to get ready to go to my paternal grandparents' house which was very near to ours. We got red packets from our parents before going to my grandparents house where we received more red packets. After we ate breakfast together, my siblings, my cousins and I watched some movies and plays some games, counting who had the most money so far.

At about noon, my mother called us to go to the car as the driver had arrived and we were supposed to go to her parents house for lunch. My father had left for work and would be fetching us at around 3 pm. In my maternal grandparent's house, a lot of relatives had already arrived and some of them were on the way. We ate lunch quickly before interacting with everybody there. Actually, my cousin, Christiana also followed us to my grandparents' house and we all got a lot more red packet there. We were RICH!!!

At 2pm, my mother along with her brothers and their wives, children and us of course, went to my grandmother's sister's house. There, we ate snacks and played with our baby niece, Sharon. Sadly, we only stayed there for a little while as all of us had to go back and say goodbye to our grandparents before going home to meet my mother's two aunts, one who was Christiana's mother. Unfortunately, my cousin, Theodore, dropped his hand phone into the drain outside the house, where he fell in once before too. So we all stayed around to look until one of my aunts called and asked us to go back.

Arriving home, both my aunts gave us red packets and we all ate dinner together. We all went home and we felt that it had been an eventful and fun day.

Hari Raya Puasa
Although Hari Raya Puasa ended months ago, I still remembered the experience. It was fun. You finally get to eat all the nice, succulent food after fasting for 1 long month. This is how i started off the day.

Hari Raya Puasa :

The eve of Hari Raya, i slept at about 2 am in the morning, tossing and turning up in my bed, unable to sleep. After several attempts, I finally managed to doze off. I woke up at 6 am to do my prayers and after that followed my family to the mosque to do the Hari Raya prayers. It lasted for about an hour or so. After that, we finally went home and I was the first one to feast on the food.

I ate as much as I can as it was only once in a year that you get to enjoy Hari Raya. My grandmother cooked Rendang, Lontong and also 'Sambal Goreng'. My favorite was the Rendang. It was simply delicious. Yummy! After that, at around 11 am, it was time for us to seek forgiveness from our parents. Being the youngest one in the family, I started first.

After that, we went visiting to my grandfather's house. While we were there, our relatives reach simultaneously, one after another. It was indeed an enjoyable time, taking photos together and teasing each other. After that, my relatives went to my house because my mother was the oldest. So, we met again.

That is how I spent my first day of Hari Raya. For the next few days after that, me and my friends went visiting each other. I got some pictures to show how beautiful we look :P

Sorry..it is a bit blur, hope you don't mind!

Chinese New Year Experience

Chinese New Year :

Ah! Chinese New Year is over! That is sad but life still goes on... As my grandmother passed away last year, we were not allowed to celebrate Chinese New Year , thus all my family and relatives went to Malaysia, Genting, to enjoy ourselves. I am envy that all my friends were able to get red packets and a total sum of two hundred dollars plus while i got none. I do not really mind about that as I will be able to get mine soon!

Once we reach Genting, the place was cold that I have to put my jacket on. The place was not very crowded and after we check in, we immediately went to our hotel room and rest till evening where we go and have dinner together. On the second day, the adults went to the casino while we teenagers went shopping. We did not buy a lot of things as some of the things does not really suit me. My younger cousin, secondary 1 this year, and me wanted to go to the theme park, but his parents does not allow him as they are afraid we might get lost. We got no choice but to stay in the hotel, it was a boring day for me indeed.

During the third day, i managed to get some time going to the mushroom farm with my brother. I like the farm very much as I was able to feed the fishes, tortoises and the chicken. We also play fire crackers there and got lots of fun.

On the fourth day, it is time for us to get back to Singapore. I regretted myself not able to play the theme park but I think it is alright. Getting back home feels so warm and secure, I sure miss going to Genting and wish to go there again!
